I wrote about the Refrigerator Hell I acquired moving into my rowhouse more than a year ago. And once the Home Depot crew took away that Samsung, once the technician turned off the water supply valve that had connected to the Samsung ice maker, I breathed a sigh of relief.
Then, about a month ago, I noticed a black stain on a nearby wall. The type of stain that promises unseen bad things going on and not readily accessible. It seemed more than a repair I’d do. So I got in touch with a fellow I'll call Donny, a jack-of-all-trades who fixes houses. Over the phone, Donny seemed sure the black stain meant leaking water and he added, “I might have to go into the crawlspace to locate it.”
Donny's rates are reasonable, so I said I wanted him to check things out. Next, I learn Donny is working on “a mansion,” so I gathered his priorities and realized "I'll call before I come over," was open-ended and beyond any time and date.
With no idea when Donny might show, I climbed down into the crawlspace. What do I hear, what do I see but drip, drip, drip and water some two inches deep gathering on the tarp. I looked up to the subfloor joists and the source drips were more or less exactly where the replacement refrigerator now stood.
I came up the ladder, pulled out the refrigerator, and the water supply valve the Home Depot technician positively closed? It leaked. The surrounding drywall was covered in black slime and disintegrating.
Returning to the crawlspace to look around, I saw the floor substructure was saturated with water and marked by white stains from the dissolving drywall above. Back in the kitchen my bamboo laminate flooring had lifted and buckled.
What I saw before me was a leaky water supply valve, that stopped leaking if turned tightly, but I decided it still needed a 1/4 inch brass cap from the hardware store. That and some plumber's tape would shut the valve off for good.
For the crawlspace and its wet subflooring, I bought a $25 box fan and got the air moving for hours on end, for a week. Then I went down to look around. No dripping, no pooled water on the tarp, and joists dry to touch.
As for the kitchen flooring, I figured, with the subflooring absolutely dry, the laminated flooring might be persuaded to go flat.
I took out my mechanics tool box--at least 60 pounds-- and set it on the wayward laminate flooring. I'll give it a few more weeks, but it is now acceptably flat and free of that creak, creak of ill-fitting flooring.
